According to George Osborne, "There are 5 Million people living on permanent out-of-work benefits. That is a tragedy for them and fiscally unsustainable for us as a country - we can't afford it any more."
Our society currently appears intolerant and resentful that the Government is spending money in the form of Social Security Benefits, from the taxes we pay, to some able-bodied people who appear to be less than motivated to work.
However we all understand that people find themselves in circumstances where they can’t support themselves or their families, and that’s what Social Security Benefits are rightfully for.
What most people fail to make a daily connection with is that all prices for all goods and service’s we purchase has already been loaded by the retailer accounting for Tax on his company’s profits, employee PAYE, Regulatory Licensing, Road Tax, Tolls, Fuel, Insurance, VAT (Value Added Tax, VAT is flimflam for Icing on HMRC multilayered cake i.e. the economy!), Council Tax, Alcohol and Tobacco Duty, Stamp Duty, Saving; CGT, IHT. Do you see? HMRC…fingers are in every pie!
Believe it or not, this system holds our whole way of life together, including how the Banks work to create money for us to enjoy life, and you can read about that later by clicking Banks, the big illusion.
There is another way of looking at it, instead of scoffing at people on Job Seekers, Tax Credits, Housing Benefit etc. (some of whom do work), remember they too are Taxpayers, and the money they are paid in the form of Benefits goes right back into “our” economy.
Though when people are afraid of the future and that fear strikes at the heart of an economy i.e. it’s people, they usually stop spending and the perverse nature of this behaviour actually accelerates an economy’s impending doom. Effectively it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy, from a lack of confidence and common fear, all of which can be manipulated by the media and politicians for their own political gain.
What can you or the Government do about it immediately, very little! This problem is like a giant oil tanker at full speed, it will take a long time to turn and you have to be careful where you turn to avoid hitting any rocks and causing a disastrous oil spill.
It’s no good just saying cut their benefits and they’ll find work, just to get votes, the work has to be created. We live in a society of high glamour, celebrity wannabes plastered all over the TV and media, the have’s and have not’s.
People may not want to sweep the streets, clear the bins or pick veg, and you’ll probably find it’s against their Human Rights to force them with the threat of putting them into a position of more vulnerability through lower income, i.e. slashing benefits, when whole generations have been accustomed to handouts from our Fair Society. Are we all of a sudden to become unfair? Would you like that done to you, to your children, friends or wider family?
One of the risks we run with this dangerous way of thinking is seen in the Developing World, where Social Security Benefits are non-existent, and there is widespread crime and corruption as people struggle to feed themselves or their families, as they feel left behind by their wealthier neighbours.
In the end they may have to turn to AID handouts from Developed Countries as a last resort, incidentally funded by Charities and Governments of us, the same Taxpayers that smile down on our unfortunate foreign neighbours whilst we scoff at our own unfortunate neighbours at home.
Those people on Benefits, you know the ones, well you know the saying, there for the grace of God go I. Given the opportunity I believe they may want to be Fireman, Teachers, Managers or even Bankers earning the salaries to match, but might feel that circumstance are working against them.
If we just cut benefits, we’ll force people into financial crisis, fear and resentfulness then eventually they may enter into survival mode to provide for their family. In this situation people are capable of anything, including criminal activity to feed their family.
What are we to do, continue providing a basic standard of living that is fair, and re-educate that part of our society or do we force them into financial crisis and start building more prisons? Think about it, either way we the taxpayer will still be paying.
The problem is one of opportunity, not a physical opportunity like positive discrimination, but the opportunity, as you may have had, to view life differently, to open your mind.
I don’t mean just the basics of A, B, C or 1, 2, 3, an education. Without an understanding of how to wield the basics like a sword through life’s barriers, most of which are in our own mind, either singularly or as a collective, we don’t have a chance of correcting our society’s dependency on Social Security Benefits.
A real education is one that inspires us to achieve (not just teaches us how to pass an exam paper), it provides us with a feeling of independence not dependence, shows us that persistence is the key to success, and that anything is possible, especially that "thoughts are things".
"If you think you can do a thing or think you can't do a thing, you're right" – Henry Ford.
"A mind once expanded can never contract to its original size." - Ralph Waldo Emerson
"Your mind must be like a parachute, it’s of no use at all unless it opens up." - Dr Joseph Murphy
"Empty pockets never held a man back. Only empty heads and empty hearts can do that." - Norman Vincent Peale
People need inspiration to re-instil within them the greatness of our forbearers who forged forward through adversity and set backs, despite which, their determination and persistent attitude built the modern world we now live in and take for granted.
Our forbearers didn’t just give up and sit at home collecting Benefits, however this is what our society has allowed to happen, and now because of the financial and political climate, society just wants to blame and demonise people on benefits, calling them cheats, lazy etc.
How does that help, does it fill them with self-esteem, confidence, any sense of self-worth. The same people that the Government wants to just get a job, they are bombarding with negative language and imagery. This is the first thing that needs to change.
What do you think about the debate?
